NETFLIX NEW FEATURE
The Problem
Netflix's "My List" feature only allows users to save titles in a single, flat list without categorization, personalization, or sharing options. This limits how users engage with saved content over time.
-
Users often save titles to watch later, then remove them after viewing.
-
There’s no way to revisit liked or loved content after removal.
-
The lack of organization makes it difficult to find or remember past favorites.
-
Users have no built-in way to create custom collections or share lists.
The Goal
To redesign Netflix’s “My List” feature by introducing a more organized and personal way to save content that allow users to revisit what they enjoyed, build custom lists, and share them easily.
Role in the Project
Redesigned the interface based on a conceptual idea
This conceptual project was inspired by my own experience using Netflix’s “My List” feature and realizing its limitations. Like many people, I mainly used “My List” to save titles I wanted to watch later. Over time, I noticed a recurring problem: once I added something, I often forgot why I had saved it in the first place. Sometimes I would preview a show or movie and think, “This would be perfect for a long train ride” or “This is exactly what I want to fall asleep to”, but when I returned to my list days or weeks later, that context was gone.
I also observed that “what we’re watching lately” has become a common topic in casual conversations with friends. In those moments, I often wished I could quickly pull up a list of the shows and movies I had genuinely enjoyed. Netflix already allows users to mark titles as “I like this” or “Love this”, but these reactions are currently hidden away for algorithmic purposes rather than user reference. I saw an opportunity to make them accessible, turning them into practical, personal collections.
In my redesigned version, the original “My List” function evolves into a “Watch Later” list, since that’s how most users already treat it. Alongside it, users can view dedicated “Liked” and “Loved” lists, helping them revisit favorites, share recommendations, or even find similar titles when browsing in the mood for something specific. I also introduced the ability to create fully custom lists from “Watch with someone” to “For Background Noise While Working” offering flexibility for personal viewing habits.
Finally, I envisioned a simple sharing option that works like Spotify playlists: clicking “Share” on any list would open a standalone, view-only version that friends can explore without navigating the rest of your account. This combination of categorization, personal context, and sharing aims to make “My List” not just a static storage space, but an interactive, personalized hub for saving, organizing, and recommending content.
